How to Find the Best Criminal Defense Attorney in Los Angeles

Posted by Ronald D. Hedding, ESQ. | Jul 05, 2020

Most people who find themselves in trouble and on the wrong side of the law obviously want to find an attorney who can help them, and many people search for the best criminal defense attorney.

I think the thinking on that is that the better the attorney, the better the result. I tell you, there is definitely a lot of truth to that way of thinking because if you've got a great attorney — you've got one of the best attorneys — obviously, that attorney is going to be able to do the best job of whatever needs to be done.

That's the key.  What needs to be done?  Do you need to go to trial? Do you need an attorney to work out a deal with the prosecutors and the judge?  What do you need that attorney for?

Experienced Lawyer Local to the Courthouse

That's one of the big things that I talk to clients about when they meet with me. We try to lay everything out on the table regarding their criminal case so that we can really get a good idea of what it's going to take to get them the best result.

I think some of the factors to look at when you're looking at the best attorney in Los Angeles are how long that attorney has been practicing in the area where your case is pending.

It's crucial to select an attorney who is familiar with the local legal system. A local attorney is likely to have a better understanding of the jury pool, judges, prosecutors, and law enforcement in the area where your case is pending.  This knowledge is instrumental in devising a winning strategy for your case.

So, they're going to know what it takes to win your case in that jurisdiction, and that's crucial for the best attorney to know what it's going to take to get you the result that makes sense in your case.

What I mean by that is, if you can't win your case, then obviously, you're going to need to try to get a result that gets you the least amount of charges possible and keeps you out of custody, among a whole host of other factors depending on the type of crime that we're actually talking about.

So, experience in the jurisdiction where your case is pending is crucial.

Criminal Lawyer Whom You Can Relate To

In addition to that, I think getting an attorney who you can relate to is important—that's why I always suggest meeting with the attorney if you can, and I try to meet with everybody.

How to Find the Best Criminal Defense Attorney in Los Angeles

With this new Coronavirus going on, it's not as easy to meet with everybody, but I definitely try to do that because, the way that I look at it, you should shake your attorney's hand, look them eyeball to eyeball, and really get a feel for what that particular person is and what they're all about.

The reason I say that is because how they relate to you is how they're going to relate to a jury.  It's how they're going to relate to the judge.  It's how they're going to relate to the prosecutor.

You have to realize that the feeling of comfort that you get with your attorney or discomfort — whatever the case may be — is going to transcend and translate into your case.  So, that's a big reason that I think figuring out the best attorney in Los Angeles, also has to do figuring out somebody that you feel good and you feel comfortable with.

Another crucial aspect to consider is the attorney's reputation.  Do they have positive reviews online?  Are there indications that they are competent and among the best in Los Angeles? This should instill confidence in your choice.

Lawyer Who Takes Active Role in Your Defense

The last thing that I would probably say is that if you're hiring who you think is the best attorney, that attorney is going to be a part of your case. I can't tell you how many times I have people hiring lawyers, and then they come, and they end up hiring me, and I say, "Who was your other lawyer?"

They say I don't even know. I don't even know their name. I don't know anything about them. What tricked me was that some lawyer put all their credentials on an internet advertisement. I then went in there. I hired that firm, and I didn't get that lawyer.

I just got a younger lawyer, somebody who probably has less than five years' experience.  I said, why did you hire that lawyer if you didn't know that it was the lawyer you originally called?  People just don't think about that.

If you're not used to hiring a criminal defense attorney, how would you know that bait-and-switch game where the attorney you think you're hiring is not even involved with your case?

It's crucial to ensure that the attorney you're hiring is actively involved in your case. This should be a non-negotiable. You deserve an attorney who is committed to your defense.

I encourage you to check me out.  Look at my ratings.  Look at my reviews.  Look at my videos.  Hopefully, you'll get a good sense of who I am and then come and meet with me.  Ask to meet with Ron Hedding.  If you've got a criminal case or a loved one has a criminal case, I stand at the ready to help you.
