Criminal Process After Being Arrested In Los Angeles

If a person is arrested in Los Angeles County, they must be bought to one of the 40 + Courthouses in within 2 business days. If they are booked for a felony case, the jail will typically not bring them into court for two days. The reasoning behind this is that for felony bookings, the jail will give the detectives enough time to review the case, question any potential witnesses and then present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. In misdemeanor cases, the person is typically brought to court within 1 business day. If a person is arrested on a holiday or the weekend, that will cause them to be kept longer in most of the city jails.

Of course, once a person is booked, they can post the appropriate bail and be released quicker than the two business days mentioned above. If a person is released on bail, there court date is usually set approximately thirty days ahead in the Los Angeles Courthouse that has jurisdiction over their case.
